Benefits Quarterly recently published an article by Noelle Weinrich, GeoBlue’s Director of Product, entitled “Pushing the Boundaries: Emerging Global Health Care Needs for a Work-From-Anywhere Culture.” The article outlines the changing environment of the workplace as it shifts to a more remote/hybrid culture. It also highlights the considerations as it relates to healthcare benefits that employers should take into account as this trend continues.

Transparency in Coverage and Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2021
At the end of 2020, Congress passed several healthcare reforms as part of the Consolidated Appropriations Act (CAA). These reforms—also referred to as the No Surprises Act—aim to curtail balance billing and out-of-network charges without advance notice. With the introduction of additional rulemaking throughout 2021, GeoBlue worked to implement the No Surprises Act for its corporate expat portfolio nationwide and its New York and California ACA student health insurance plans, meeting all applicable enforcement deadlines. Most notable are the implementation of machine-readable files (MRF) and a web-based cost-comparison tool for consumers. This flyer provides an overview and status of key provisions.

There are now two MRFs of pricing information available to the public:

One bullet The in-network negotiated rates with their providers
Two bullet The historical payments to out-of-network providers and their billed charges.

Both files follow a standard format and will be updated monthly.
We also completed phase one of upgrading our web-based cost comparison tool, allowing members to search 500 of the most common shoppable services. The results generated by the tool now include negotiated rates and personalized pricing based on the member benefits. The project team will continue to work on implementing phase two of the cost comparison tool to include all shoppable services by 1/1/24.
