About

History/Background

Over the last several decades, the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association (BCBSA), through its Licensees, has been growing the Blue Cross and Blue Shield (BCBS) portfolio of international health insurance products in order to meet the needs of increasingly mobile customers. It began with the BlueCard Worldwide® program to support coverage outside the U.S.; expanded in 2010 to include GeoBlue Expatriate, Traveler and Student products; and was then followed by the 2014 announcement of a strategic global partnership between BCBSA and Bupa Global for co-branded Expatriate products sold outside of the U.S. This partnership of two of the most trusted brands in healthcare delivers a comprehensive portfolio of international products to meet the needs of customers, no matter where they work, live or travel

Our Foundation

The Blue Cross Blue Shield Global® brand was created in 2016 to unite the BCBS international products under one name, a name that represents the security and stability that Blue Cross Blue Shield customers have become accustomed to in the U.S.  The Blue Cross Blue Shield Association is a national federation of 36 independent, locally-operated Blue Cross and Blue Shield Companies that collectively provide healthcare coverage for more than 106 million members – 1 in 3 Americans.
